Guide on every Hero's Skill/Spell damage type, Reduced by spell resistance, armor, or unreduced

This is a guide made by Danat on Dota-All Stars Official Forum

Here is a list of damage types made by me. I have gathered all info about damage types from this forum and some cases were tested personally. Also, clogon helped me a lot in making this guide more accurate.
To simplify the understanding (which sometimes leads to less information about damage type details) I have divided damage types in 4 categories:
1. Normal, which is reduced by hero's Armor and can be blocked by Shield Block items/skills (Stout Shield, Vanguard...)
2. Magic, which is reduced by hero's Spell Resistance.
3. Mixed - which is reduced both by Spell Resistance and Armor - meaning this is most non-dangerous type of damage
4. Neutral - not reduced by anything - most dangerous type of damage

Note: Do not confuse 'Magic' damage type in my list with 'Damage type = Magic' that is widely used in changelog and some guides. Read my legend carefully to understand what I mean by saying 'Magic'.


Note2: Do not ask me for clarification on whether the information on some specific spell is correct. I see no point in this guide if users would still ask me to confirm info on every spell. If you have found out that the information is incorrect/outdated then provide a replay and I will update the guide. Otherwise I'm gonna ignore clarification requests.


Below there is a list of all heroes (version 6.58b) and their skills, colored accordingly to the damage-type list above. To make it easier to search for a specific hero, I have used a bold style on the most commonly used part of the hero name/class. Additionaly next formatting styles are applied to show how will the skill work against units with magic-immunity (Avatar):
  • Skill name - does not work (if it's an ulti, then there will be only cast animation without any effect... except lost mana for casting it smile.gif)
  • Skill name - works, but without dealing any damage (some effects not related to damage - slow, stun, etc.)
  • Skill name - works as usual (don't care if he has Avatar smile.gif)
  • Effect name - this effect does not work on Avatared units. Used when skill is partially negated by magic-immunity to specify the exact effects that doesn't work.

¹ One makes you receive 10% of original damage (be it spell damage, normal or unreduced) and the rest 90% of that damage will be received as spell damage and splitted between you and your bear. So if both you and your bear are under the One effect, then you will receive 10% of original damage and 45% of original damage as spell damage. If only you have the One buff, then you will receive 10% of original damage and 90% of original damage as spell damage.

² Sunder - exchanges percentage of hp/max_hp between 2 heroes (one of which is you). If someone of them is magic-immune, then his hp will not change, while hp of his "partner" will change as usual.
This leads to simple conclusions:
1.Cast Sunder on enemy-Avatar - simply raise/lower your own hp to opponent's hp percentage.
2.Cast Sunder while being Avatar - no change in your own hp, and only your opponent will have his hp % changed to your hp %.
3.If both "partners" are magic-immune, then Sunder does no effect.


³ Culling Blade (killing) is actually reduced by armor, but it deals 100 million damage, so even with every amount of damage mitigation in the game, it will still kill anything that is below the HP threshold. The red color was chosen as more appropriate, so people wouldn't think they can buy armor to counter Axe's ulti.

EMP deals magic damage if it is about to kill a target, in other cases (where the enemy does not die) it uses direct HP removal.

* When you cast Nightmare on a target, you deal 5 damage. The target goes to sleep and is invulnurable for ~1 second. On the FIRST damage tic, if the target already has less than or equal to 20 HP, Nightmare is removed (The target wakes up and lives). Else, the target will lose 20 hp per tic (unreduced) untill they are at 20 hp or less. Then Nightmare will deal 50 damage (hence the 'killing blow'). This means that it is possible for a Hero to survive the killing blow if he has enough spell resistance (perhaps only Anti-Mage).

Extra damage taken will be of the same type as the incoming damage. For example, if you were hit by normal damage, then the extra damage will be normal too and will be reduced by armor (but not by shield blocking skills though, because they are only applied for the incoming damage). Since the type of this damage depends on the type of the source damage and is reduced/unreduced same as the source damage, no color was chosen to avoid confusion

I know I haven't been updating recently, but that's because I've been very busy, and I'm really trying to post something within the next few days to keep you guys updated.

Finally, here's a treat for you guys, in my apology for taking so long on this release, some things I can promise you'll see:
-MUCH more recoding and optimizations! You'll be running DotA at up to 25% higher frame rates! (As reported by some of my beta-testers)
-A new game mode :D
-Reworked rune system
-Some major gameplay changes regarding the laning phase, gold distribution, teamwork, etc - this will make the game faster paced, less farming, and more of the team battles we love DotA for! This is obviously one of the biggest changes that is causing many balance issues and delaying our release, but it's worth it!
-Minor terrain tweaks. Everyone loves more juke spots and cosmetics :)
-A few reworked hero abilities. Don't think I don't notice that many heroes have very similar playstyles! I will try to rework heroes one by one, as I have been doing the past couple of versions. Stay updated on the official dota forums, and you might get a hint on who these will be =D

Finally, know that no matter how long and hard my beta-testers work, we can't find all the bugs and balance issues alone - it will be up to you guys! Developing DotA is a community effort, which is why I love you guys so much. If you don't like our release, please be patient and give as much feedback as you can, so we can make DotA as enjoyable for everyone as we can!

- Flame Break is now a targeted AoE spell
It no longer explodes on the first unit in a path. It travels towards the targeted destination and does its effect there. Projectile speed 900 (instead of 750)

Bone Fletcher
- Death Pact damage bonus increased from 4/6/8% to 5/6.5/8%
- Death Pact hp bonus increased from 50/60/70% to 50/65/80%

Bristleback
- Quill Spray damage cap increased from 180 to 220

Centaur Warchief
- Great Fortitude strength bonus increased from 12/24/36 to 15/30/45

Doom Bringer
- Level Death bonus damage increased from 250 to 275

Dragonus
- Base Intelligence increased by 3
- Arcane Bolt bonus intelligence damage increased from 1.5x to 1.6x
- Arcane Bolt manacost decreased from 90 to 70
- Concussive Shot cooldown now scales from 20 to 20/19/18/17

Juggernaut
- Omnislash now gives Juggernaut 200 flying vision during its duration

Keeper of the Light
- Mana Leak stun duration increased from 1.25/1.5/1.75/2 to 1.3/1.6/1.9/2.2

Kunkka
- Torrent AOE increased from 200 to 215
- X Marks The Spot cooldown decreased from 20 to 16 seconds
- Ghost Ship stun duration increased from 1.2 to 1.4

Lanaya
- Psi Blades bonus range increased from 40/100/160/220 to 60/120/180/240

Legion Commander
- Moment of Courage cooldown increased from 0.9 to 1.2

Lina Inverse
- Fiery Soul attack speed bonus increased from 30/40/50/60 to 40/50/60/70
- Fiery Soul movement speed bonus increased from 3/4/5/6 to 4/5/6/7%

Lion
- Voodoo cooldown increased from 13 to 15
- Voodoo manacost increased from 110/140/170/200 to 125/150/175/200
- Voodoo duration increased from 1.25/2/2.75/3.5 to 1.75/2.5/3.25/4

Luna
- Moon Glaive damage decrease per bounce decreased from 35% to 30%

Magnataur
- Skewer will now cast in the direction you targeted if you cast it beyond the max range

Medusa
- Split Shot now shoots 5 arrows instead of 4

Morphling
- Morph passively grants 3/4/5/6 agility and strength
- Wave Form now properly dodges projectiles

Naga Siren
- Changed Rip Tide cast mechanism
Rip Tide now casts in a 450 aoe around naga and all of her illusions. Enemies can be fully affected by the Illusion's aoe. The effect does not stack. No longer uses cast point.

Nerubian Assassin
- Urna Swarm replaced with a new spell
Urna Swarm will be reused for a future hero.

Spiked Carapace:

Temporarily enhances the Assassin's chitinous armor with organic barbs, causing him to prevent and reflect the next player based damage instance and stuns the target. Lasts 4.5 seconds.

Duration: 4.5 seconds
Damage return: 100% (after resistance on your hero)
Stun: 0.6/1.2/1.8/2.4
Cooldown: 10
Manacost: 50

Note: Only triggers on player based damage, both physical and magical. Does not prevent status debuffs. Spikes visually grow out of the hero when he is in this state.

Ability Code: A2KO

Necrolyte
- Heartstopper damage increased from 0.5/0.7/0.9/1.1 to 0.6/0.8/1/1.2
- Sadist level 4 mana regen increased from 48 to 60

Ogre Magi
- Added Aghanim's Scepter
Gives his other head the ability to cast a more primitive version of Fireblast. It has a constant (not modified by ultimate/level) 275 damage, 1.5 second stun, 20 cooldown, 400 manacost. It can trigger multicast. This is an independent 5th skill added to his ability card.

Ability Code: A2KQ

Phantom Assassin
- Phantom Strike cast range increased from 700/800/900/1000 to 1000
- Phantom Strike cooldown rescaled from 20/15/10/5 to 14/11/8/5

Priestess of the Moon
- Moonlight Shadow cooldown decreased from 180/160/140 to 160/140/120

Puck
- Ethereal Jaunt now dodges projectiles
- Phase Shift autocast removed
- Phase Shift manacost removed
- Phase Shift level 4 duration increased from 3 to 3.25 seconds
- Aghanim Upgraded Dream Coil no longer increases the manacost from the base spell

Pugna
- Decrepify cast range increased from 550/600/650/700 to 700
- Life Drain damage increased from 100/150/200 to 120/160/200 (with Aghanim's from 175/225/275 to 180/240/300)

Queen of Pain
- Shadow Strike initial damage increased from 50/70/70/100 to 50/75/100/125

Razor
- Unstable Current damage increased from 40/60/80/100 to 40/70/100/130

Shadow Fiend
- Necromastery now gives 6 souls for killing a hero (instead of 1)
- Necromastery soul count increased from 8/16/24/32 to 12/20/28/36

Sniper
- Headshot damage increased from 30/30/40/50 to 30/40/50/60

Storm Spirit
- Ball Lightning now properly dodges projectiles

Techies
- Attack range increased from 650 to 700

Tinker
- March of the Machines duration increased from 5 to 6 seconds

Troll Warlord
- Battle Trance attack speed bonus increased from 60/100/140 to 60/120/180

Viper
- Poison Attack damage increased from 6/12/18/24 to 10/16/22/28
- Fixed Poison Attack damage not being lethal

Visage
- Familiar's armor increased from 0 to 0/1/2
- Gravekeeper's Cloak recovery time decreased from 14/12/10/8 to 12/10/8/6

Warlock
- Infernal's Permanent Immolation damage increased from 20/30/40 to 30/40/50 per second
- Shadow Word duration increased from 8 to 9 seconds


Animal Courier
- Courier cost decreased from 170 to 150

Bloodstone
- HP regen increased by 1 to equal the sum of its parts
